The Good Doctor is composed of a series of sketches in which the connecting thread is the Narrator. It is regarded as one of the funniest of Neil Simon’s plays. The richness of the characters helps to explain why this was such a hit on Broadway.
In one sketch a father takes to the streets, with his reluctant son in tow, looking to introduce him to the mysteries of sex. Another sketch sees a sexton, who is nursing an excruciatingly painful toothache, entrusting its care to a yet-to-be qualified Dentist – with hilarious results.
The stories are droll and witty and the humour is infectious. There are also some very poignant moments and the play is performed with the accompaniment of delightful underlying music.
